The wine history of Drama begins thousands of years ago, a fact confirmed by the widespread worship of the God Dionysus (also known as Bacchus), the God of winemaking in ancient Greek religion and myth. At the foothills of mount Menoikio, only a few kilometers away from the winery, a temple of God Dionysus was discovered that dates back to around 400 BC.
In the 20th century, a progressive recovery was noted in the wider region with the creation of model vineyards and modern winemaking facilities, offering an ideal microclimate for both Greek and international grape varieties. Many of the area’s wineries can be visited and participate in the annual event “Dramoinognosia” organized at the end of May by the Union of Wine Producers of Drama.
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Drama zone was recognized in 1995, and over the past twenty years has transformed the area into one of the most important wine-producing regions of Greece. With the aim of strengthening the recognition of the region, a proposal has been submitted for the creation of a PDO zone that concerns some famous wine, such as the white blend of Assyrtiko and Sauvignon Blanc.
The privately owned vineyards of the estate are situated in two different sites, Kokkinogia and Perichora, areas known for their unique terroir since ancient times. The climate is typically Mediterranean continental with low summer night temperatures and afternoon mountain breezes providing ideal conditions to maximize the aroma and phenolic potential of the grapes while limiting disease development. In the context of the effort to highlight all those characteristics of the varieties associated with the microclimate of our region, particularly low yields per hectare are maintained and all cultivation care takes place manually.
The optimal maturity of the grapes is approached with modern viticultural techniques, such as irrigation according to RDI standards, and the parallel monitoring of the necessary parameters with the help of weather stations. In addition, in our privately owned vineyards, we follow the Integrated Management System and interventions, especially plant protection, are always carried out with a view to maintaining the biological balance of the underground and aboveground parts, as well as consumer protection.
The vineyard in Perichora is situated on the foot slopes of Mount Menikio. Soils here present great diversity, covering a wide range between “terra rossa” red clays at the lowest points to limestone soils and marls at the highest altitude. Vine rows benefit from mountain airstreams during summer. This area is also dedicated to numerous indigenous varieties cultivated experimentally, in search for the ones best adapted to the conditions of the region.
The Kokkinogia (red earth) vineyard, with its characteristic red clay soils, is located right in front of the winery. This is where it all began in 1998 when Christoforos Pavlidis planted the first 2 privately owned vineyards for the estate. Low fertility and limited soil depth, together with high plantation density, ensure low vine vigor which contributes to complete fruit maturation.
